The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.
Water quality, food security and natural habitat are top priority focuses for our changing times, especially living on an isolated island. Having safe, abundant natural spaces for us to enjoy and gather natural and cultural resources from is important for our own health and the wellbeing of the future generations. Two of Surfrider Foundation’s successful initiatives, The Blue Water Task Force and Ocean Friendly Gardens, help target these issues with community support from the ground up. Having community buy-in is important because it harnesses the people power of a specific place while also fostering awareness and the sense of unity. There is a sense of accomplishment that arises when networks of people are given tools and an organizing structure to help make a difference in their community.
The success of these programs, being a spotlight in the community, would garner support in volunteer power and donations organically. However, while we are in the beginning stages, the extra support to jumpstart the programs would help ensure strong development.
